The Close Air Support mission requires a flight of aircraft to patrol a box covering approximately twelve miles by twelve miles.
--
This box is placed by the joint air / ground command some way behind the enemies front line of troops, any ground vehicle or helicopter within it can safely be assumed to be the enemies, and can therefore be destroyed.
--
Many boxes will be placed to the rear of the front line, and patrolled by any aircraft able to carry air to ground weapons, these aircraft may be vectored to a target within their 'kill box' by a JSTAR, Forward Air Controller, or by friendly ground forces.
